When I graduated from college this year my aspiration was to find a position teaching whereby I could try to make a difference in the lives of my students. Never in my dreams could I have imagined the challenge before me. I accepted a position to teach fifth grade one month before a historic tornado
My students were impacted in a variety of ways.
Some lost their homes, their friends, and family members. Others lost nothing material except the innocence of their youth. They have seen the town they call “home” ravaged. School is a place, with the proper surroundings, which could be the first sense of normalcy for my students. At school they can get away from the havoc and enjoy their friends – like fifth graders should.
My Project
The project I am requesting assistance with is “Bringing Books Alive into the Classroom Through My Listening Centers" for my students. It is one thing to read from a textbook but to truly remember is to hear the words being read to you, as well as reading along with the CD. Students will utilize the listening center with headphones and CD player by reading along with the literature reading sets, such as "A Wrinkle in Time" and "Belle Prater's Boy" for their beginning reading centers selection of book choices. Students will learn to read independently while practicing fluency and comprehension skills. Listening to a story being read aloud also helps to reinforce pronunciation for students of any words that they might not recognize while reading without the listening center.
