Bringing Words Into Our Communication Masterpiece
My students need an iPad and Osmo system to incorporate the arts and common core spelling standards into their speech-language centers.
My students are active participants in their learning and work together to bridge the gap between core curriculum targets in the classroom and individualized goals within our speech therapy room. We love to incorporate movement, art and innovative hands-on learning activities into our sessions.
I work in a high poverty school that welcomes fabulous PreK-6th grade students through its doors every day who are excited to learn, be nurtured and loved.
My students benefit greatly from being active participants in their learning through hands-on experiences. Communication in its genuine form works best in a naturalistic environment so it is very important for my students to be comfortable and safe in our classroom in order to allow themselves to expose their vulnerabilities and reach their full potential.
My students keep me smiling/laughing every day with their authentic love for learning and play on words that I am honored to experience as we make memories they often recount years later. My students take pride in their learning, meeting and often exceeding individual speech-language goals that target articulation, phonology, phonological awareness, language, social/pragmatic skills and/or fluency goals.
My students would use the iPad and Osmo to integrate speech-language centers into therapy as well as regular classrooms. They will use the "Words" app to incorporate their individualized articulation targets as well as common core spelling standards through independent or partner work. We will take photographs of items/actions throughout our school environment that contain target articulation sounds or language concepts, creating novel libraries that incorporate our school environment as seen though student eyes. The students would use the "Tangrams" app to target following directions as well as position goals as they communicate with the group during its use. The "Masterpiece" app would be used to illustrate student created therapy materials that they could use to expand upon language skills, create task cards, and create student illustrated strategy posters and artwork for display.
This project will have a tremendous impact on all of my students as the materials would transcend all age and ability levels.
I could individualize the materials to meet the needs of each of my students in an engaging, hands-on learning experience. The iPad and Osmo could also be "checked out" by teachers to incorporate speech-language centers into their classroom which target the individualized needs of their students, while providing them additional practice outside of direct therapy time.
