Bringing Visuals to the Classroom and to Student Work
My students need an increased understanding of creating research presentations by using technology and then being able to share their hard work with the class.
Become an instrumental part in educating my students on the importance of public speaking and how to give a flawless presentation. Creating a research project with visuals not only does wonders for the person listening but it also helps the speaker gain a better understanding of their subject.
Our school is made up of students from 40 different countries who speak over 38 different languages.
English is often not their first language and visuals are sometimes the only means to understanding a concept. Many of my students being english language learners need the ability to not only see visuals in order to understand a concept, but they also need to be able to use visuals themselves while they are presenting materials to the class. In my geography and economics class its incredibly important to use pictures of maps, migration patterns, budget charts, and supply and demand graphs. Printing these things in black and white can only go so far. I do not have access to multiples of color copies so projecting on to my whiteboard is the best option in order to get the full picture.
My Project
My students are extremely technology driven. I notice that they are more engaged and able to interact more when I am able to involve technology in a lesson. They also are extremely curious to learn how technology works. We have one support class here at my school that offers computer training; however it is only a semester long and only about 1/3 of my students actually get the class on their schedule. I would love to provide them with more computer and technology skills as well as up the engagement in my own classroom planning to reach a whole new level of achievement.
The major research project at the end of the year I am hoping to use this projector for is during our economics unit. Each of the students will create a product and produce a business portfolio for their product that will demonstrate sound knowledge of economics. I then want the students to present their business plan to the class as if they were presenting it to investors. The projector would help them do this.
This projector will help in my classroom immensely.
It will enhance engagement with my kids as well as offer them an increased understanding of maps, charts, and graphs. They will also have the opportunity to use it themselves when presenting their own work in front of the class. Presentations and public speaking are very important components to social studies curriculum and I hope to add understanding of technology to that list as well.
