Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach high school special education students with a variety of intellectual, physical, and sensory impairments. My students' ages range from 13 to 22.
Our school is located in an impoverished area of South Louisiana.
The year before the pandemic, our department transitioned from a four-block schedule to an eight-block just for our self-contained students. This system has helped to give my students independence as well as a more traditional high school experience. I have a total of 28 students that filter in and out of my class all day long both virtually and in person. Throughout the day, I teach a combination of classes which include adapted science, transitional employment skills, adapted fine arts, and community-based instruction.
My students face challenges every day, but their spirit and drive have helped them to overcome these challenges. I challenge my students to see their exceptionalities as different abilities rather than disabilities. Covid-19 virtual learning has opened new challenges for my students but they are overcomers.
My Project
My students face daily struggles and difficulties, distance learning should not be one of them. My outdated computer is not compatible with the needs of today's post-COVID 19 distance learning classroom. In the classroom, I can use my smartboard to connect to virtual students while teaching my in-class students. Unfortunately, we have been told that we may be totally virtual again in the coming weeks. This means that my access to my students will be extremely limited again.
When we shuttered our doors in March, I could only connect with my students through my smartphone.
This limits the quality of teaching that I can provide for my students. My old laptop is not compatible with video conferencing applications.
Please help me change this for my students. Help me give them the virtual classroom that they deserve. Help me elevate their learning experience while still keeping socially distant.
There is so much that I can do for my students to engage them through online learning but my lack of appropriate equipment limits what I can provide them at this point.
