Bringing VA Studies to Life!

Help me give my students historical fiction and nonfiction books that engage and support our studies. I am finding that my boys, especially, are increasingly hooked on our current topics, and I want to expand on this enthusiasm!

My Students

This year I am in my twentieth year of teaching, and I am embarking on a new journey at a new school. I am returning to the classroom at a Title I school after being a Literacy Specialist for a decade, and am excited about the opportunity to build a literacy rich, technology infused learning community, filled with love and trust.

I want to provide my students with the best resources possible, for every day to be a newer, richer experience.

We will laugh, learn, and work together as a family. Our school population includes students who speak English as a second language and a rather high population of students who are provided a reduced or free lunch, so it is important to me to provide them with materials and opportunities they might not be exposed to at home. As our school motto says, "Together we fly far!"

My Project

As we travel time through the signing of the Declaration of Independence, race through the Revolutionary War, explore the making of a new nation and charge on to the Civil War in our Virginia Studies, I notice my students are igniting in excitement and curiosity.

I want to be able to both provide them with additional depth of information through these historical fiction and nonfiction books and also capitalize on this interest to keep my students engaged in reading!

The excitement over reading about battles, famous historical figures, weapons, diseases, victories and defeats has my students' curiosity definitely peaked.

I am looking forward to exploring and learning with my class and having lively discussions based on these books.
