Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My awesome second graders come from a very low socioeconomic background, with the majority falling below the poverty line. They are mainly English language learners (72%) and many of them live in homes which house multiple families under the same roof. The median income is well below poverty level, with some being homeless. Some of these seven and eight-year-olds have the sole responsibility of taking care of their younger siblings while their parents are working, with many parents working more than one job. Others are latchkey children.
Our school is Title I and 80% of the children receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch.
In addition to the many challenges that these hard-working students face, they also are coping with the fact that our school is situated in a high crime area with frequent gang activity. My children have extremely limited access to technology in their homes, yet with all these obstacles, my students come to school with much enthusiasm and an eager desire to learn.
My Project
Teaching at a title 1 school can be very challenging but, also rewarding at the same time. My students come from all walks of life with some living in motels while others are homeless. Asking these students to bring supplies would not be feasible. These children are already dealing with the frustration and chaos of moving from place to place frequently and not having a stable place to call home. I cannot burden these families by expecting them to provide the necessary school supplies when they are unable to provide a home for their families. This is why I often purchase supplies out of my own pocket because I believe that every child deserves an opportunity to succeed. However, with the new school year quicly approaching, I am asking for a few items to help offset this cost. This year, my students need clipboards, pencil pouches, whiteboard erasers, scissors, paint brushes and other necessity items in order to feel confident and succeed in school. We also need cleaning supplies to ensure a healthy environment for every scholar. And finally, we need water color paper and paint brushes. I am very passionate about art and feel that it provides my students with the creativity and self expression that they desperately need. With this being said, your contribution will help and prepare our students for a brighter future.
