I teach inclusion kindergarten at an urban public elementary school in Northeast Philadelphia. Each day I open my doors to twenty-seven eager five-year-old boys and girls who are extremely excited about learning. Our school's budget has been slashed repeatedly.
The school and the surrounding community have successfully worked together to make sure all of the students have the needed supplies to start the school year.
However, there is no money for the extras that make school more exciting and fun.
Currently, my students are seated at seven, small round tables which are extremely cramped and restricted. It's difficult for five and six-year-olds not to impinge on each other's personal space. At times, instructional materials overlap and students become frustrated or confused. No matter how I position the tables, many students are facing away from the projector or document camera making it difficult for them to follow lessons. As a result, instruction is suffering.
Rectangular tables will provide ample room for my students to work, grow and learn.
Students will be able to collaborate, share materials, and access the curriculum in an effective learning environment.
