My elementary students are hard working and thirsty learners. They come from a beautiful area of the country, but we struggle economically in our region with many students living in poverty. Limited funding by local and state government makes it difficult for us to have everything that we need in order to function optimally.
Unemployment is high, and we have many students on free and reduced lunch.
Poor economic conditions should not stop these wonderful children from having the tools they need to learn and be successful. The need is there, but the funding just isn't.
By providing my students with the tools they need, who knows the great heights they can soar to. I long to be able to help them achieve the potential that they possess.
My Project
There is not a lot of cultural and ethnic diversity in the beautiful rural area where my students and I live. I want to be able to bring the diversity of the world to my young learners through books. My students are wonderfully curious and eager to know more about other people, other cultures, and other ways of life. Many have not had opportunities to travel outside of our region, but the world beyond them can be brought to them on our library shelves. I want them to be able to learn about and better understand life in different countries and people with backgrounds and cultures different from their own.
