Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students at my school are amazing young thinkers; however, many of them come from very difficult situations. Our district is designated as a Title I district. Our community has a high ratio of immigrants, ELL students, foster children, and families moving here from the inner city.
Many of my students come from a background of poverty and trauma.
Yet every morning, they greet me in Zoom with smiles, wanting to succeed in their Independent Studies courses.
Although many are achieving success, some are unmotivated, and I am working hard to bring them to a point where they want to work for their own satisfaction. Part of this is through connecting them to the outside world with resources that they can consider their own. For others, my motivation is to help them become interested in the world around them and connected to current issues and events.
Many of my kids are isolated due to concerns over Covid and will remain homebound throughout the year. I want to keep them engaged with the world while supporting their academic growth.
My Project
Our students are all online. They are isolated and have little contact beyond Zoom interactions during the week.
My students need to feel connected and excited about learning.
They need exposure to what's going on in the world around them, and the ISP curriculum, while rigorous, is not particularly engaging or timely.
I have had great success with these Scholastic magazines in the regular classroom and would love to provide my students with interesting and timely resources. I believe it will help them socially, emotionally, and academically with exciting academic applications!
