Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Hey Mom, Dad, Look at what I learned today"....This is the parent-child interaction I want to support by giving my students and their families a resource to learn about the world's wonders and current events. Encouraging reading and family involvement in learning is my goal
My students are a diverse group of fifth graders that have a strong desire to learn.
They attend a K-5 elementary school which is extremely low income. We are striving to get parents involved in their child's daily learning. For many of our families, English is a 2nd language. This fact is reflected in the students difficulty with connecting new concepts to prior knowledge. Unfortunately, they often have no prior knowledge to connect to, due to lack of travels, and experiences beyond their neighborhood.
My students are hard workers and full of desire to explore new concepts. Students exhibit Character Counts values( citizenship, caring, trustworthiness, fairness, respect and responsibility) that guide their behavior in and out of the classroom. This has encouraged a campus feel of a safe and fun place to learn and grow. I really want to give them as many opportunities as I can to have the kinds of experiences that will help them compete in their academic careers.
My Project
I have requested a subscription to Time Kids Magazine. I plan to utilize this resource in several ways. Within the classroom, it will be a field trip through text as the stories venture to different parts of the world. This will greatly enhance vocabulary development, as well as give the students a means to understand the world events that they may otherwise miss out on.
Current events help to educate students while giving them a kid friendly tool to encourage non fiction reading. The biggest plus is that students will have assignments to complete with their parents which will promote parent involvement in their child's learning. It will give parents an anxiety free moment to read and discuss current science and social studies topics with their child. The text and answers will be at hand so that parents do not feel intimidated.
Field trips are so expensive.
My goal is if I can't take them out to the world then I want to bring the world to them. By receiving a subscription to Time Kids Magazine, I will be motivating my students to learn about the world outside of their neighborhood. Each student will also have this great resource to take home and share with their family which encourages the home school connection that many students at our school lack.
