This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Teaching at a bilingual k-8 grade school gives me a really unique experience to teach an enormous diversity of students. Students from all over the world, as well as our city, converge here to blend their experiences into one community.
On a daily basis, I hear students speaking a multitude of languages, sharing their cultural backgrounds, and enjoying eachother's company.
I am lucky enough to teach science to this community. Teaching an inquiry-based science class adds another level. Students are able to move throughout the classroom, explore, discuss, and question. The student-led classroom allows the students to push one another to a new level, challenging eachother's thinking by asking higher level questions.
My Project
Teaching in a large city and a beautiful old school is an amazing experience, however it does come with some downfalls. Old buildings are not sealed as tightly from the elements, allowing city critters and environmental pollutants to sneak in. As such we tend to have so many more allergens floating around.
In the past few years, I have noticed many of my students out sick, due to allergy concerns.
It is of utmost importance to me that students are at school as much as possible so that they can learn. I am asking for an air purifier that is able to purify many of the allergens found in our area as well as a Roomba to keep the floors clean.
Keeping the air and floors clean should make a huge impact on my student's health and therefore on their happiness and academic futures.
