My students need math and reading manipulatives as well as backpacks to take them home to practice with their families for homework.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are a wonderful group of 2nd graders. They attend an urban school where 100% of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. The students come from many different backgrounds and face many different challenges in their day to day lives.
There are many single income families, families that are receiving assistance in one form or another, and families that are or were homeless at one time.
Regardless of the challenges these students face, they always come to school with a smile on their face. They are eager to learn and when given an even playing field; they are capable of great things! I want to help even the field for them and their education.
I have found that many of my students do not have the supplies at home or out of school, to practice skills learned in class. My students will be using the backpacks to take home a variety of math and reading manipulative and activities to enhance and practice the skills and concepts we have been learning in class. The backpacks will be divided up equally between math and reading with an activity in each bag. The students will be assigned one backpack a week to use with their families and practice their skills at home. By being able to keep the bag a week, the students will be able to spend a few days and not feel rushed to get the activity in if it is a busy evening, I want them to enjoy sharing this with their family.
The activities will all be hands-on enhancements of skills the students have seen and used in class.
They will be practicing tangrams and geometric shapes, telling time, addition, subtraction, and multiplication through games. The dice, tangrams, shape cards, and tangrams will be used in these activities. In reading, they will work on contractions, word families, and story elements. I requested flashcards, puzzles, story wands, and word family dice to use with the take home bags. This project will enable to students to take their learning home and share what they have been learning. The students that are homeless often do not have the needed supplies to complete meaningful homework. This project will enable students to perform meaningful homework and have all the supplies to complete the assignment on hand.
