Bringing the Real World to Small Town Arizona

My students need 30 Time for Kids magazines, which will help my students gain understanding of the real world outside our small town in Arizona.

My Students

I teach in a small, rural town in the southwest. We are a Title 1 school so some of my students struggle with reading skills and they lack books at home to read. By giving to my project, you will be helping students to take home four, weekly newspapers a month.

My students have a wide range of backgrounds.

Many have learned English as a second language. We are a K8 school; however, many students lack basic supplies so to them books, magazines, new-papers are a gift. They will treasure these new-papers and read them time and time again. They will be exposed to things that many of them will never see in their lives. This new-paper will bring the world to them. It will inspire them in many different ways through many engaging articles. I remember when I was in first and second grade. I did not enjoy reading. It was hard and I could not remember what I read. We had Weekly Readers and by reading those I was able to become a better reader. I became a more confident reader. I was given a different type of story to read. I learned about the real world.

My Project

Time for Kids will bring the world to our small town. It will give my students the ability to have reading material to take home with them every week to share with their families.This new-paper will bring the world to them. It will inspire them in many different ways through many engaging articles.

With the new Common Core Standards informational text is so important and students lack the skills to understand informational text.
