My students need books with diverse characters that look like them. These books will help form connections with the text and engage them during independent reading time.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work with K-5 students in an urban Title I school in Charlotte. My students are creative inquirers who are eager to succeed. They love hands-on engaging lessons that incorporate technology and allow them to express their ideas.
Many of my students come to school with a growth mindset despite the challenges many of them face at home.
Our families are working class families that often do not have the supplies and resources needed to practice assignments at home. Therefore, my students often come to me with instructional gaps in reading and math.
As a reading teacher in an urban area, books are an essential resource for my students. Many of them do not have access to books at home and rely on our school to expose them to a variety of text. It is my goal every year to help them set goals, make growth, and instill a lifelong love of reading.
My Project
With the focus of elementary school shifting to test scores and test-taking strategies, it is my goal to spark the love of reading again. Students in my classroom want books that interest them but our classroom library lacks titles with characters that look like them. All these books have been chosen because they include characters of color that my students can relate to. These stories teach social-emotional lessons that our curriculum lacks. They also provide opportunities for modeling the strategies I want students to be using as they read independently.
The best way to become a better reader is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading.
My students will be given choice in the books that they select from our library. These books will help develop a culturally rich selection of text that they can enjoy reading.
