Help me give my students 3 iPads that will not only help support their learning, but also teach them the skills needed to be successful in the 21st century.
My school's population is full of students that are active, thoughtful and constantly pushing themselves to be their best self. They love hands-on, engaging activities that require them to get up and move, or to think outside of the box. They walk into my class knowing that in order to succeed, risks will have to be taken. Rather than shy away from the challenge, they take it head on knowing they'll come out smarter and more knowledgeable than before!
However, in a day and age full of technology, many of my students lack access to technology or proper instruction on digital citizenship.
Our school district is located in a small, blue collar suburb of Philadelphia. At times we see handfuls of students come and go from our district due to unfortunate and unexpected home situations.
Each child that I work with loves to learn, even though it can show in different ways! My classroom uses a variety of strategies, flexible seating, and teaching methods to help meet each child exactly where they are. I love working with my students, whether it be one-on-one or during Spanish class. They each bring something new to the table and make every day special!
My Project
While learning a second language can be empowering, it can also feel intimidating for some students. With standards emphasizing the importance of communication skills, not many students feel comfortable speaking in Spanish right away, whether it be in front of the class or just a partner. Furthermore, digital modes of communication are more important than ever in today's society. Email, web casts, etc. are viable modes of communication that students may become exposed to as adults. Thanks to a wide variety and accessibility to free and educational apps, any student who steps into my classroom will be able to show their ability to learn and communicate in Spanish through the use of iPads. Access to these tablets will also help them engage and learn beyond language skills.
The use of iPads in my classroom will also help students explore the vast cultures within the Spanish-speaking community.
Unfortunately, there's only so much I can teach or show students about the world within my four walls. Providing access to iPads will allow my students to learn how to discover more about the world we live in, the people who inhabit this world with us, and how our similarities and differences make our Earth a better place. Lastly, the use of iPads will also serve as an important tool for students to problem solve, whether it be to find meaning in the words they hear or read, or the creation of other project-based learning experiences with their peers.
