Mrs. Moore from Mc Kee KY is requesting Computers & Tablets through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

Bringing the Digital Age to Learners with Special Needs

My students need these Chromebooks to help meet their individual learning needs. If funded, my students with low-gross motor skills, and assistive technology needs will have access to their curriculum that accommodates their individual learning styles.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, where 100% of the students are free and reduced lunch, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. Millions of students across the United States cannot benefit fully from a traditional educational program because they have a disability that impairs their ability to participate in a typical classroom environment. For these students, computer-based technologies can play an especially important role. Not only can computer technology facilitate a broader range of educational activities to meet a variety of needs for students with mild learning disorders, but adaptive technology now exists than can enable even those students with severe disabilities to become active learners in the classroom alongside their peers who do not have disabilities.

My students walk into my classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day.

I want them to know I believe in them and they can be successful despite their learning, visual or hearing impairments.

My Project

I chose the Chromebooks to help meet the individual learning needs of my students by providing them the assistive technology they need. Utilizing Chromebooks within my classroom will allow my students to better understand concepts and keep up with their peers, and will also allow the school to more easily integrate special needs students into the general education classrooms.

We are no longer bound to helping one particular student with a single specialized technology.

These assistive technologies can be extended to any student who needs them making it possible for my student to deploy built-in or easily downloaded assistive technologies. These include speech recognition, screen-reading tools, Braille displays and text-to-speech solutions for the visually impaired; and sound amplifiers, closed-captioning applications and video conferencing technologies that facilitate sign language and lip-reading for the hearing-impaired.

Studies prove that special-needs students who regularly use assistive technology achieve greater level of independence, challenge themselves, seek out new opportunities and are more willing to reach out to teachers and peers to ask questions and collaborate.
