This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from all walks of life. We are a Title 1 school district, so many of my kids have limited resources. We serve pre-k through age 22 at a public school for special needs students.
Our program provides educational as well as therapeutic services to our students.
We serve children who have developmental delays including autism, psychiatric disorders, learning disorders, trauma, and just about everything else you can think of.
Our students need us to help provide for their daily emotional, physical, academic, and social needs. I have been their art therapist for the past 26 years, and feel grateful to be able to be a small part of their lives.
My Project
These diverse art supplies will meet the needs of our diverse learners. Our special needs students need predictability, which is difficult to achieve during a pandemic. Being able to have art therapy experiences at home that mimic what was available in the art therapy room at school, will help provide the expressive experiences to which they are accustomed. Having fluid media choices (such as paint, markers) and resistive media (pencils, wiki sticks), help provide the continuum of expression that is necessary to implement art therapy successfully. The sketchbooks will contain the artwork so that it is safely kept in one place to be reviewed from week-to-week. Art Therapy and the creative experience provide much needed coping skills and stress-relieving opportunities.
