Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a true reflection of our community. Almost 90% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and students come to us from 50 different middle schools. This diverse population is ready and hungry to learn; they just need the right tools to do so. Technology and STEM materials are harder to come by these days, especially for subjects in social sciences and humanities. I work specifically with our special education population who require hands-on learning and differentiation. We want to give them the opportunity to excel in both the content while learning how to use technology. Our students will be well rounded and prepared for the future.
My Project
In our social studies curriculum, students are required to work in groups on a number of topics. Most recently, our students created presentations on a specific social activism movement. They researched key dates, influencers, and outcomes for the movement. I was so impressed with their work, but the struggle to get a few working computers in the classroom on a regular basis was the only hurdle holding most of them back. Having a set of Chromebooks specific to our class and group of students will ensure they are learning at the same pace, and are prepared for success. Students can work in small groups, using the technology to conduct research, create presentation slides, and ultimately present to the group. This project will mean the world to our kids, so thank you in advance.
