Help me give my students a listening center with a CD player, a ready-to-go headphone set, an ABC alphabet playmat to use as a designated area, and a large Carolina book display for storage.
The majority of my students are from an urban area. They have chosen to attend our public charter school, to be a part of a school whose mission and vision are to provide a well-rounded STEM-based educational experience that fosters leaders, problem solvers, and critical thinkers. Our public charter school inspires, excites and empowers young learners to embrace the wonders of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
Our school receives one-third of the funding traditional public schools in our area from the state.
This creates an economic hardship for our school. As a result, we have a challenging time acquiring materials to support our STEM-based curriculum for our students.
My incoming Kindergartners will be the first generation to experience our brand new STEM-based​ school and we're eager to begin this journey together. My students have a love for reading and for books and they are eager to learn how to read! They love being read to and it's so rewarding to see their faces when they get caught up in a story!
My Project
I would like to bring technology to reading to my Kindergarten classroom. An all-in-one CD player and a ready-to-go listening center headphone set will be part of our learning center rotation. Each day students will enjoy listening to a story while reading along. The ABC alphabet playmat, with its superb graphics, will be a perfect designated gathering spot for this activity. The ABC alphabet playmat is round so the CD player can be placed in the center with the students comfortably gathered around it. The high-quality bookshelf will be the perfect place to store the books and CDs for our listening center! The book display will help organize our books and CDs and make it easy for my students to find the books they are interested in.
By donating to our project, you will give our students the opportunity to increase their vocabulary while modeling reading fluency through technology!
My students will have the chance to hone their critical listening skills, voice inflection skills and they will learn to decode unfamiliar words. Following the listening center activity, the students will be tasked with comprehension, vocabulary and phonemic awareness activities, depending on the student's level.
The listening center will be open during our free play time so students can enjoy listening to stories at their leisure. A listening center is such a popular activity and I'd love my students to have a chance to experience it.
