I am a second grade teacher at a Title I Expanded Learning Time School. We have a longer day which offers various enrichment activities as well as the time to teach to our students' needs. Over the past couple years, I have noticed many of my students have had a hard time focusing on tasks due to various learning styles and needs including ADHD and trauma. Our students come to our school from various walks of life, some from our town, some coming for a short period of time and some living in a long-term homeless shelter. It is clear in our building, that once you are apart of our community, you are a part of our lives forever.
At my school, we are a family, and the students are the heart of our family.
Teachers and families work together to provide the best experiences we can to our students. We work hard to make our classrooms and hallways a safe place where students can thrive in a comfortable environment made especially for them.
My Project
My students use many programs in our school's computer lab. They work hard to master math facts and literacy skills, as well as typing on the computers. My students use Fastt Math, Symphony Math, Lexia, Accelerated Reader and Prodigy Math, but with limited time on the computers, they do not gain all of what each program offers.
The convenience of having Chromebooks in our classroom will broaden our use of technology, as we will be able to use them as needed and in centers.
Recently, my students wrote autobiographies and we borrowed Chromebooks from other classes so that we would have enough to type. I've never seen my students so excited to write! They were completely engrossed in learning how to use Google Docs and send me their writing. I want to do more projects like this, and having 3 additional Chromebooks in our room would make this task much easier and convenient!
