My exceptionally amazing students come from families living on the economic margin, in a high-poverty neighborhood where almost 100% qualify for free-lunch. Our classroom's diversity is reflected not only in its multicultural ethnic make up but also in a range of learning abilities with English Language learners, exceptional, special education, and on-level students. I strive to meet the diverse learning needs of my students by differentiating my teaching strategies with activities that go beyond the curriculum.
In the classroom, regardless of societal labeling, firsthand experience with poverty, or our under resourced school's urban location, my students feel safe to be independent thinkers, spirited learners, and creative engineers.
I have created an emotionally safe space and inclusive classroom environment by teaching my students specific skills to help manage their emotions and behavior. The attainment of these skills, are facilitated with a diverse approach, creative interaction, and open dialogue between everyone in our classroom's learning community. When students feel as if a teacher is truly invested in their socio-emotional well being, students will judiciously invest their time and efforts into the content being taught.
Students need access to viewing their work in color as it improves their ability to learn the importance of imagery and output of quality assignments. Students are in the midst of working on a research project aimed at increasing their global awareness about the importance of water and the scarcity of this valuable resource in underserved countries. Our class has access to a color laser printer but needs assistance with replacement cost of toner cartridges! Please help us to alleviate some of these high recurring costs. Printing research items in color will help to deepen student understanding of this critical topic while giving them amole opportunity to showcase their work.
