I serve special education students at a school where a major oil refinery is located just a few miles away. More than half of the students are from low-income households and come from all over the district to join this primarily Dual Immersion school where we work incredibly hard to provide a quality education. I work with the special needs students who struggle in the general education classroom. My students focus better and work harder if they are engaged during lessons.
All students perform more effectively if they are engaged and given materials that allow for kinesthetic learning which includes using technology.
They deserve the same quality education as a higher income school. Many of my students come to school hungry and without proper clothing.
They are inquisitive, intelligent, and want to be successful. They need someone to believe in them, have empathy for their needs, and make a connection with them so they build their confidence and self-esteem. They need to experience curriculum through visual, tactile and kinesthetic modalities.
Integrating subjects with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) allow students to gain the confidence needed to work hard.
If students are given everything they need to put STEM skills into action, they will invent, innovate and discover and bring their ideas to life.
A maker space is a community center with tools. What better way to create by enabling students to design, prototype and create manufactured works that wouldn’t be possible to create with the resources available to individuals working alone. The Maker Space cart is packed with everything needed—from tools and tubes to gears and wood supplies—the sturdy metal cart creates an instant maker space anywhere. What a great way to motivate students and get them excited about learning.
