My students need easel pads, crate files, folders, card stock paper, sentence strips and tape to support the new teaching strategies I learned this summer.
My students attend a Title I elementary school. They are hardworking and very enthusiastic. They are from diverse backgrounds and add to the culture of our school. They face many challenges daily.
"The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows." -Sydney Harris.
My students have turned windows into doors. They break through barriers not many other students face. They made 20% gains on our state end-of-course exam. If they have the tools to be successful, they can be. They want a level playing field in the classroom.
My Project
I attended the National Math and Science Institute week long training in Pensacola, FL this summer. I am going to bring the STEM lessons I learned into my civics lessons.
The card stock, sentence strips and sticky chart paper are necessary for the students to make visual aides to support STEM in social studies.
I am using the file folders and crates to create a more organized and welcoming classroom.
My ELL and ESE students really need engaging rigorous lessons and the ones I discovered during this professional development are perfect for struggling readers. I also discovered the CRIT method developed by the University of Texas which really helps student paraphrase and engage with text an a deeper level. I am excited to use these new methods with my students.
