My students need 15 rocket kits so we can learn about the components of a rocket. We also are in need of the launch pad and launch controller so we can send our rockets up!
My classroom is completely arts integrated. I don't use textbooks, but rather hands-on approaches to learning. When we use all our senses instead of simply reading out of a book, learning is increased exponentially. My kids look forward to school because they know there's an adventure in store daily.
I teach a 5th grade self-contained gifted class.
My students are extremely bright and very inquisitive. They love to learn and are hungry for more than a "normal" classroom can give them!
I really enjoy teaching them because we can explore subjects deeply and the kids always take us on an adventure in learning that I get to support and cultivate through hands-on projects, exploration and arts integration. It is AWESOME!
However, it is also extremely challenging to make sure I feed their curiosity in a way that is engaging. Our classroom is intense, imaginative and the kids keep me on my toes, which is great in education; I don't get complacent in my teaching.
Our unit on space is lacking in general, so I am thankful to donorschoose.org to be able to bring more space curriculum to the classroom. I am thankful for your help to ignite curiosity about space exploration in my classroom!
My Project
The rocketry supplies will be used in a variety of ways in the classroom. We will be reading about the history of Space Exploration in Language Arts to get an idea of how rockets came to be important to the space program. In addition, we will look at the history of space exploration in Social Studies to understand the progression of space exploration from the early days of NASA and their use of the Redstone rockets. In math, we will be able to look at surface area and also touch on angles, geometric figures, etc. Finally, in science, we will build our rockets- looking at each step of building them- and then culminate the activity with a launch of the rockets!
I want to ignite a curiosity in the kids to pursue studying space exploration and jobs in aerospace. These kids have been GIFTED with amazing brains and I want to cultivate an excitement for learning in them that lasts their entire lives! They must use their intellectual gifts; not waste them.
I was blessed with an opportunity to attend Space Camp this summer for free through a scholarship.
This was life changing and I now get to come home to my classroom and share what I learned with every student that I teach for years to come! These donations ensure that I can bring these experiences home to the students; that I can share that excitement and ignite a passion to learn within them. Not every student gets to launch a rocket in 5th grade, but thanks to you, my students will!
