My Students

My students are learning that Science does not have to be "scary". Through hands on projects and activities in the science lab, students are learning science concepts while applying them to the world around them. In our science lab we fully believe in the Chinese proverb: Tell me and I'll forget. Show me and I may remember; involve me and I'll understand.

We are a low income school that fosters student engagement, involvement and teaching our students that through their efforts they can achieve more, dream big and make an impact.

My Project

Teaching sound concepts to second graders can be challenging, it is something we hear, not see. Using Boomwhackers and tuning forks, students can experiment with different pitches and see the vibration in objects. Students will get a hands on approach to looking at different columns of air and how it relates to pitch.

Boomwhackers come in different lengths so students see that if the column of air is longer, the pitch is lower.

Students can experiment on how the different pitches are put together to produce the sound we hear. Tuning forks allow students to experiment with column length as well as see and feel the vibration of the sound waves.
