Help us raise aquatic life in the classroom, understand ecosystems, and teach food web. There's nothing more exciting than caring for living things and watching them grow.
My students are 5th graders from low-income immigrant families who come to school ready to learn, but lacking experiences that more privileged students have.
They are English language learners. All of our students qualify for the free meal program. We are a Title I school as well as a Performance Improvement School. Many of my students are struggling to learn and understand English with no help from their parents. Math and science are usually not engaging. I would like to SPARK their interest.
My Project
With the aquarium, students will be able to observe the fish and make detailed documentation. Our learning will continue throughout the year because we will keep the fish healthy due to clean water, filter and pump functions, and ample space for them. Because of the prolonged life of the fish, the children will have longer to study them. They can observe and chart their growth and eating habits. Comparisons can be made from the beginning to end of the year. The owl pellets will provide my students with their first experience with dissection. They will be introduced with the basics of forensic science- locating, measuring, identifying, and categorizing bones.
The aquarium and owl pellets will draw their attention, their interest, and will boost their love for learning, while at the same time providing an interdisciplinary tool for me.
Students will write stories, collect math data, and read books about the aquatic environment. Your generous donation will deliver huge benefits.
