I work at a special education school serving emotionally disturbed, learning disabled, and other special education classified students. Our students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds in NYC; over 95% of the student body is eligible for free lunch and over 90% receive public assistance.
I teach a modified curriculum in all the major subject areas, including math, English, science, and social studies.
Despite their special learning needs, my students are focused on their studies all year long, and they work diligently to complete requirements for their high school diploma. I have some students who are planning to attend college, and others that will be participating in vocational programs when they graduate.
My Project
I would like to have The Nature of Things come visit our school. This organization delivers an environmental outreach program that presents quality live animal presentations. The program originated in 1982, and it provides students with hands-on and developmentally appropriate science education that features an inquiry-based approach to live animal exploration. Professional naturalists bring mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and insects and present them with a nurturing, developmental approach to the study of nature and science. The Nature of Things supports the dream to nurture a love of nature and science for all.
This project is important because reading from a textbook is never enough.
Students need as many hands-on experiences as possible, and I have many who aspire to work with animals in the future. Thank you so much for considering my wonderful students!
