Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

We are in a digital era. Every child has a smartphone, plays video games, or watches TV for recreation. I find myself charged with the challenge of making science engaging to this generation of students while maintaining rigor.

My students are 8th graders from New York City.

They are attending a public, Title I school, and almost all are receiving free or reduced lunches. They are full of curiosity and wonder, and are naturally drawn to science. I am looking forward to teaching my students a high school level course this school year so that when they move up they will have the opportunity to explore non-required science classes like Chemistry, take an AP course, or explore other areas altogether.

My Project

I am making a simple request for a digital document camera. Currently, I take pictures of student work on my phone and load them into my PowerPoint's to let students conduct error analysis. It has been GAMECHANGING in creating understanding and meaning. To have the ability to do this live, with no lag time, would streamline the process and increase student accountability. This is also an incredible tool to highlight exemplary student work! I hope to give students a feeling of pride and achievement by asking if I may show their work off to the entire class, highlighting why it is so amazing. This tool is so versatile, I can plug it into a microscope and do demonstrations of a dissection, explain how to measure the field of view, and so much more. We can also use this as a video camera to stream video to a university lab, other students across the country, or record class presentations. Finally, I plan to use this device to create a digital archive of student work.

This project is important because it will increase the engagement in my class and help streamline the process of returning student work.

Ultimately, this tool is sought to increase student outcomes!!
