All students have the right to learn something new every day. My students have a thirst for learning that can not always be quenched from the standard curriculum for their grade level. They deserve enrichment opportunities to help them explore their areas of strength and interest.
I work at a rural Title I school in Florida.
Our school is made up mostly of students coming from families with low household incomes. Approximately 88% of our students are on free or reduced lunch. The students at our school are hard working and deserve to be able to explore their creative and innovative potential. My specific students are in the academically gifted program and range from grades second to fifth grade. My students have a strong desire to learn, but are sometimes limited by the resources we have available.
My Project
Students will take home bags each month with activities to be completed at home. The purpose of this is to both help students with the science content by encouraging connections at home and to increase parent involvement/awareness of the science occurring in school. Overall, I hope this will foster a love and culture of scientific investigation and exploration in the childrens' (and adults') homes.
It will be like a "Science of the Month Club!" The monthly bags will include directions for at least two activities as well as all materials needed to complete these activities.
Students will be given the bag and told to complete the activities with someone at home (it could be a parent, grandparent, older sibling, cousin, etc.). The bags will also include suggested questions to help guide a discussion at home.
At the end of the month, each activity will be modeled in class and students will have the opportunity to share their results and observations from what they did at home. This will contribute to a unique opportunity to discuss variances and compare outcomes while not excluding any children from the learning.
Science bag activities will vary by student grade levels and needs. Here are some samples of the bags that will be created:
Matter: Grow creature measurements/ Instant snow
Forces and motion:Balloon Rocket/ Paperclip pendulums
Earth: Weathering and erosion lab/ Mineral properties
Weather: Water cycle in a bag/ Weather observations
Space: Galaxy model/ Oreo moon phases
Life: Grow your own lima bean seed/ Inherited traits and behaviors
