My Students
The middle school where I am proud to teach serves almost 1500 students in grades five through eight. We are located in northern New Jersey and are the largest public school district in our county. We are extraordinarily diverse, with children from over 45 countries currently enrolled in our school.
Many of our kids are first-generation immigrants who are eager to take part in the American Dream, but since the majority of our students come from hard-working families where the parents are working two or three jobs just to make ends meet, the kids do not have access to technological resources that will adequately prepare them for the 21st Century workforce.
As a Title I School, all students are eligible for free breakfast and free or reduced rate lunch, due to their parents' socioeconomic status. Our student body is 64% Hispanic, and 26% Black/African-American; nearly 55% of our children do not speak English at home.
My kids are hungry to learn and frequently take advantage of extra opportunities offered to them to improve their studies, even during their lunch periods or after school. They are our future, and from where I sit, it couldn't look brighter!
My Project
It is my hope to provide my fifth grade students with Scholastic News and its science supplement, Science Spin so that they can learn about current events in school, then bring those things home to share with their families. Since the magazine comes with a digital edition, and each student's interests are different, I am also hoping to provide each child with his or her own set of earbuds so they can listen to the accompanying videos of interest.
Scholastic News is a great way to introduce kids to current world events, and Science Spin will help my students learn about new discoveries in science; ideally, the kids will be able to teach their parents and siblings about the things they learn in school at home.
My students need ways to share what they are learning with their families, and topics in social studies and science are not only relevant but interesting and fun to discuss.
I would love for the kids to have things to actually talk about with their parents when they are asked, "What did you do today in school?"!
