Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Computer science opens more doors for students than any other discipline in today’s world. Learning even the basics will help students in virtually any career—from architecture to zoology. It's important for every 21st century student to learn to code.
Our school is identified as a low socioeconomic campus with a large bilingual population, more than 75% of whom are considered at-risk.
It becomes imperative that we expose our students to opportunities that will stimulate the mind and support STEM education. A diverse population such as ours, leaves teachers meeting the needs of a wide variety of learners, ranging from students who struggle to acquire the English language and others who need to be presented with new challenges daily. All of these needs and more can be met in our Makerspace.
This is where our enthusiastic 21st century learners use the 4Cs: communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity to solve real world problems.
My Project
We are requesting a variety of robots: Cubelets, Ollie, and Ozobots to teach students coding. Cubelets is the perfect tool to explore robotics. Cubelets are a groundbreaking robot construction system designed to teach the big lessons behind complex systems and design thinking.
Ollie is an agile, tubular robot that spins, drifts, and flips based on the programming of students. By using Ollie, students will have the opportunity to learn coding (to program the robot), engineering (to create ramps and tracks), and problem solving (to solve assigned challenges).
Ozobots are mini robots that students will be able to program using white paper and colored-markers. They will work in collaborative groups, learn how to code and program, and show their creative abilities as their Ozobots travel along the path they have created.
All three robots will be part of our Makerspace and will provide students with the resources they need to empower 21st century learning.
The majority of our students need continued exposure to STEM education and the items we are requesting will help.
Students will be able to learn the basics of coding and focus on the 21st century skills: communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. If we expose students to coding today, they will hold the key to their future.
