Bringing Robotics to Life: A Project Based Lesson Part 2
My students need Meccano-Erector M.A.X. Robots with AI, Sphero BB-8 robots, Parrot Minidrones with accessories, and resources for our STEAM classroom so that we can grow our robotics and programming instruction.
Innovative, creative, and hardworking are just a few of the words I would use to describe my students. They are the reason I can't wait to get to school every day! They challenge me just as often as I challenge them.
We are a Title I school in rural Florida, and while we don't have Disney World, we do have magic happening in our classrooms every day.
We are also a STEAM Innovate Learning Lab. That is a mouthful, but it describes an amazing change in classroom instruction. In our room, we use collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity throughout our day. The kids are taking ownership of their education and the results are phenomenal. We are thinking about and preparing for our future in third grade.
My Project
These highly engaging technology resources will have a huge impact. With the Parrot Mambo Minidrones, the students will collaborate with their teammates in order to build their drones then use coding in order to get them to maneuver around obstacles. While the Sphero BB-8 Drones, will take their coding to another level as these mini robots will interact with one another, thus providing another level of critical thinking the kids will have to apply in order to give these little guys the gift of "life". Finally, we will have one more layer of robotics to attend to when we add the M.A.X. Robots. They will also require the 4 Cs (communication, creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking) but now we are adding artificial intelligence. The M.A.X. robots will "grow" with the students as they interact. As you can see, this systematic layering of robotic knowledge will help us become more aware of how these robots can serve many purposes, while solving many problems.
Any time I can make real-world connections, and place a new technology in the hands of my curious STEAMovators, I know that amazing things will happen.
They are innately creative, and at this point, realize that failure is a part of the learning process. So, I expect them to utilize these incredible resources for hours on end.
