This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Mr. M. from ME is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need an organizational tool for guided reading. My students need quality biographies to read. My students need paper trays to put their work when completed.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
When was the last time you could say that you personally gave the very first book to a child? With the materials provided in this project, not only will students who are new to our country learn about historical figures, they will also be given direction during guided reading time.
My students are amazing in every way possible.
While our class and school lack reading materials such as the ones requested in this project, we make up for it in will and determination. About half of my students are from the city I teach in, while the other half have arrived in the United States from refugee camps in Africa over the past five years. Our class has meshed together to form not a classroom, but a family. The students who do not speak English fluently are constantly helped by their peers, since the majority of the day we have 21 students fully included all working together.
The materials I'm requesting for my students are vital in the progression of our guided reading practice. We will use the organizational chart to allow both English language learners and non English language learners to see where their name is, so they can go to that specific reading station and paper trays for their completed work. While I meet with students for guided practice, another group will be working with biographies of famous individuals. What is amazing about these books is that it will be the first exposure to many students about the people they are reading about. Imagine your first time learning about Martin Luther King Jr. or Abraham Lincoln and what an impact that can make. While the books I requested are at a 3rd-4th grade reading level, this is because the majority of my students are at this level and this level book will provide the greatest amount of good in the classroom.
After teaching for seven years in a middle-upper class school in Vermont, I moved back to Maine to be closer to my family.
Little did I know the job that would find me would change the way I view teaching. While teaching many levels and cultures of students is challenging, every day I have the opportunity to make a difference in multiple lives. Each action, such as donating books like the ones in this project, helps a child become something that was once seen as impossible.
