Help me give my students access to Clint Smith's poetry collection, Counting Descent. Each student will be able to fully experience a range of a living poet's work, enhancing their exploration of poetry's evolution and purpose.

My Students
Often when students are in high school, they have lost some of their love of reading, especially poetry. In my AP Literature classes, I have very bright students who do not always trust their ability to relate to and understand poetry. Audible groans fill the room when I introduce a new poem because students feel intimidated by it. They haven't necessarily had much practice because the curriculum sometimes leaves little room for poetry exploration, and they feel hesitant to approach something that seems to have little connection with their real lives.
I want my students to find joy and connection in poetry again, much as many of them did when they were in elementary school.
A love of the written word is something they'll be able to take with them beyond high school, and I want to give them this gift.
My Project
Clint Smith's writing addresses both personal and relevant social issues. Having their own copies of his collection of poetry, Counting Descent, will help my students explore the impact of this genre in our current society, bringing it to life for them.
Reading a variety of work by the same poet will allow my students to appreciate his craft more fully while observing the range of subject areas, experiences, and emotions he expresses in his writing.
They will get to know the poet and his ideas in a more intimate way by exploring this book from start to finish. I am excited about the opportunity to teach living poets in my classroom!
