One of my biggest goals as a teacher is to stretch the thinking of the students in my class! Many of these students are used to getting all the answers right without putting forth a great deal of effort. I plan to change that!
I want my students to explore challenging possibilities.
My students are curious learners who ask lots of questions! I see that as a good thing (even when it sometimes drives me crazy). Asking questions means they want to know more and are always learning!
My third-grade students are not only learning two languages, but also learning in two languages. Students have literacy and math in Spanish for half the day, and also have literacy and math in English for the other half the day. Students have me for the English half of the day and a wonderful teacher from Costa Rica for the other half of the day.
My Project
I want to bring play back to my classroom, but in a different way. Using workbooks is not the most interesting way to learn and practice vocabulary words or number skills. I have found a way to do these things and more using Osmo, a unique gaming system for the iPad. This is a way for students to learn to code, develop math strategies, and play using hands-on educational technology. When connected to an iPad, the Osmo encourages interaction, collaboration, thinking, and learning!
After being named one of TIME’s best inventions, Osmo keeps adding more to make it work better for teachers to use to support learning and since they keep adding more, I want to keep adding more options to my classroom.
Using the Osmo activities with an iPad will help me challenge students who are used to doing well in school without really feeling the need to try very hard. Those are the students I want to challenge and push! Using the Osmo activities along with our class iPad will help me do that.
