Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are a diverse group of young people who often times have stories that will break your heart. Our students live in neighborhoods with high crime and poverty rates. They come to school hungry and sometimes improperly clothed. As teachers, paraprofessionals, and counselors we try to meet their needs as best we can, but sometimes the need is great.
As New Yorkers, we live in one of the most exciting cities in the world.
However, my students rarely get the opportunity to explore it. Some of my students have never been out of their neighborhood!
This year the STEM Department has introduced the Billion Oyster Project by participating in our own Oyster Restoration Station (ORS) and we want to bring the oysters into their classroom. We want to build our own classroom oyster tank and need to buy the materials to do so!
My Project
Our students are live in one of the most exciting cities in the world, New York, yet some fail to realize our city is surrounded by water! Through the Billion Oyster Project, we have been able to expose our students to the waterways by working with oysters and their ability to help to clean our environment. Watching the expressions of our students when they stepped foot on the ferry to Governor's Island was priceless and we want to continue to expose and educate them about the water and organisms that surround our home.
Bringing an oyster tank into our classroom would help to keep our students engaged in the Billion Oyster Project without having to be in the field every day.
During Parent Teacher Conferences, Family Fair Day, or when talking to other people about our work in the field our students can show and speak to their work with the Billion Oyster Project. This project will give our students the confidence and ability to promote taking care of our environment while learning how to be a part of a team.
