I teach first grade to a classroom family that I call the Zoo Crew. My job is to make sure my first graders love coming to school, learn to make friends, share, cooperate, collaborate, all while becoming academically prepared for second grade! My students are eager readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, researchers, and problem solvers. They love to learn through books and exploration. They also help each other grow! Each day they come into my classroom ready to learn something new!
My Project
Many children come to school without having had discussions or practice on many behavioral skills. This set of books would be used as mentor books to read to my first grade students and then springboard into meaningful conversations about the topics.
Children respond to characters in stories and can relate their own lives to these new "friends" in the books.
These books would help me teach skills such as sharing, taking turns, having good manners, tattling, and conflict resolution to an amazing group of six and seven year olds. Throughout the year, we can refer to these stories when dealing with common classroom issues. These books can help my students understand that they are not alone and there are positive ways to solve problems and improve our behavior.
