Do you remember a time when you truly related to a character in a book and couldn't put it down? My students will be studying the Oregon Trail this year and need relatable characters to help them discover a passion for history.
My students are motivated and inspiring young minds who are always hoping to learn more.
Their passion for learning is contagious and they are always asking to go deeper with their learning. Many of them lack the opportunities afforded to students in more affluent regions and communities, but this does not stop them in their search for knowledge.
My Project
I am asking for an assortment of historical fiction related to the Oregon Trail to be used in literature circles. While students will be learning about the Oregon Trail in Social Studies, I am hoping to use these books within their literacy block to help students build connections across the disciplines.
The books requested in this project will completely transform the learning atmosphere in my classroom.
Instead of hearing a lecture on the Oregon Trail, students will be able to discover the hardships and challenges right alongside their favorite characters. The circumstances they read about in these books will be compared to primary and secondary source accounts, building further background knowledge of what it was like to live along the Oregon Trail. This will give life to trail history.
