My Students

We are a Title I school in a highly transient area of a military town. My students are all second and third graders in a neighborhood that struggles economically. Nearly one hundred percent of our students qualify for free lunch and breakfast. That, however, does not diminish their enthusiasm for learning, especially when it relates to things they are passionate about!

Our students are smart and very capable students with a true love of learning through real experiences.

The economic challenges do, however, have an impact on what they have available to help them learn. These are changing times, and we have to constantly look for new ways to keep students engaged and build skills that will prepare them for potential careers.

My Project

Our students get a big kick out of coming to the library! While they are required to read continuously throughout the day, the reading material is almost always selected or determined by someone else!

Visiting the library means our students can exercise their voice and choice to make decisions for self-selected reading!

Therefore, it is my goal as their librarian to provide the best variety of book genres and levels. Although our school only serves students in second and third grade, we have a wide variety of reading abilities within those two grade levels. The pandemic has not been kind to our students who have had little access to appropriately leveled books through school and public library closures. This project is to level the playing field for our students who have suffered learning loss over the past two years and encourage enthusiasm for independent reading through book joy!
