This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Music is called the universal language for a reason. I teach at a Title 1 school where dozens of different languages are spoken. I always am amazed when a student who speaks a different language comes into my classroom for the first time and feels completely comfortable creating and performing music along with everyone else.

The music classroom is a safe space that is built for both academic and social-emotional learning.

Many students stayed home all last year and sat in front of a computer all day in order to learn. They need to be making music together now more than ever. I currently have a set of keyboards for my classroom, two of which have broken and need replacing. All of my students want to learn the piano and as they learn to play piano, their brain power is also increasing. They also all want to be drummers. I have a set of rhythm sticks, but they want the feeling of playing real drums, and the drum pads will make them feel like the rock stars that they are. My younger students also will love to move along with the scarves and make music with the egg shakers.

A K-6 music classroom has a wide range of needs that becomes expensive when trying to properly serve a wide range of ages. This project will help me better serve my students who deserve the very best.
