My Students

My students are trying to keep concert band and music-making alive in the Appalachian mountain coalfields! Our middle/high school is comprised of students in a geographically isolated, rural area, but which is also a place of rich cultural tradition and a proud heritage!

These children, from the mountains and hollows of Eastern Kentucky, are in need of the tools of their trade in order to become a part of our great American concert band tradition, and for that we need you!

My Project

Providing a piccolo for our band program will not only create a powerful force within our brand new marching band, it will also expand the level of possible artistry that our students may attain! Whenever there is a piccolo part in our concert music, right now our only option is to play the part on flute (which creates balance and timbre issues). Playing piccolo is very different from playing flute, and is a skill that all flutists should have the opportunity to pursue. The purchase of a piccolo will also enable the band to play music that requires a piccolo for its performance, which for now is limiting the music that we are actually able to play.
