Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our district is completely free lunch due to the level of poverty that many of the students experience on a daily basis.
Every year, I am fortunate to be able to say that my eighth graders are an awesome group of kids.
While each year is different, they are all always willing to take academic risks, and they demonstrate a want to be part of something bigger.
For many of my students, there is a struggle with emotional and social issues. We have programs in place that help students, however, there is room for improvement.
My Project
Each day my students and I participate in an advisory style Circle of Power and Respect. We share our news of the day, help each other problem solve social/emotional issues, and generally build a culture of family and acceptance between each other.
I gave students the opportunity to ask for experiences they would want to know more about, and their desire to learn about meditation and mindfulness took me by pleasant surprise.
We are asking for:
Yoga mats: to do whole group and small group yoga/meditation/mindfulness
Sand timer: to help us practice privately getting back our focus and using it as a cooling off tool
Totem: a game to help build our confidence and self-esteem
Assorted books: To help me find strategies to encourage positive behaviors like mindfulness, meditation, and other calming techniques
The materials in this project will help me help my students learn to cope with the stress of their adolescent lives. By contributing you will be creating a positive climate in our classroom and helping us grow our family vibe.
