My Students

My students include all the students in our school. We are an urban school, with at least half of our students living in low-income homes. Our school has a diverse population, with many students enrolled in our ELL program. As the only Reading Specialist in a middle school of almost 700 students, I work with grade-level teams to think creatively about how to support students in literacy. Together with forward-thinking colleagues, we think about the whole child. We work hard to reduce the stigma associated with the need for reading support at the middle level.

My students deserve inspired, forward-thinking, and well-informed teachers who employ best practices in literacy.

Our instructional leadership committee discusses best practices on a regular basis. Attending NELMS will help me, as the one professional who is looking at the whole school's literacy needs, to stay informed of best practices and bring inspiration back to my school.

My Project

Last year I was lucky enough to be picked to attend one day of the New England League of Middle Schools Conference. NELMS brings together forward-thinking experts in both the Middle School model and general best practices in education. I learned about student engagement, social-emotional learning, and most importantly, as the only Reading Specialist in my building, I learned about middle school literacy best practices. I came back inspired and motivated to change my school for the better. Our school team is in the middle of implementing some innovative literacy practices. As a member of this team, and as a provider of direct literacy services, I hope to bring back more ideas, strategies, and innovations to my school.
