Bringing Microscopy into the 21st Century in High School Biology

My Students

Teaching science at a school designed to prepare students for the performing arts has been such a delightful experience. One would think that arts and science do not go together, but they absolutely do! Some of the best scientists are also some of the most creative individuals.

Students at our school have an open mind when they walk into the science classroom.

They are prepared to learn and explore the beautiful world around them. When they are able to work in a hands-on environment, like a lab, their minds are able to explore complex scientific concepts and ideas, and even come up with new ideas!

This year I am working with students learning Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, and Physical Science.

My Project

This microscope will help to engage my art students in the visual nature of using microscopes to see the very smallest parts of our world. Since I have worked at this school and from when the school was started, the science department has had the same 10 microscopes for students to use. They are old, in various conditions of working, and extremely heavy for students to carry around.

This microscope, although only one, will allow students to easily see what is happening on the slide and can be projected for the whole class.

I would love to update how we look at science, technology, and give kids a more hands-on approach to exploring the topic of science to students of all abilities.

Students will use this microscope to learn more about how cells divide, what the different tissues of the human body look like at a cellular level and examine the complexity and differences in the variety of life forms on Earth.
