My students need music to listen to during writing time to help them focus. An iPod nano, docking station, and music CD's will help bring music into the classroom.
Tolstoy said, "Music is the shorthand of emotion" and Longfellow believed, "Music is the universal language of mankind." What better than to bring music into the classroom of English Language Learners?
The twenty-seven students in my classroom are Third Grade English Language Learners.
They are fun-loving and eager to learn. They attend a school in a low-income area in New York. They are mostly below grade-level in reading and writing. They enjoy being read to and writing together as a class.
My Project
My students enjoy listening to the music of words through Read Aloud and conversation. They struggle to put together words into their own writing to create masterpieces on grade-level. I have requested an iPod, an iPod docking station, and three classical music C.D.'s to bring music into the classroom. This will help the students to focus during writing time, while simultaneously exposing them to music outside of their experiences. At this time, the students get distracted when writing and in turn don't get to work on expanding their thoughts in writing. Music not only helps writers focus, but it changes their mood positively. Writing then becomes associated with this positivity, students begin to enjoy it, and want to write.
This year is the first year my students will be taking the state reading and writing exam.
They need to gain experience in writing and to grow as writers. This donation will help my students to be able to learn more about what it is to be a writer by writing in a peaceful environment. With your help, my students will be able to have a positive experience in writing and hopefully they will leave the third grade loving writing.
