Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide them with the skills needed to be successful in future careers. The jobs that will be available to my students will inevitably center around technology.
My students come from a Title I school where 90 percent of our scholars receive free breakfast and lunch.
Our school is also one of the largest schools in Long Beach As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academics. Many of my students struggle within the classroom but excel when it comes to hands-on learning through technology and making. Some of my students do not have access to technology at home, so being able to provide them with this at school would reach far beyond my classroom.
They are growing and learning in the same urban community that inspired me to be a teacher. They are dreamers, thinkers, talkers, and questioners. They are our future ambassadors, world travelers, scientists, entrepreneurs, teachers... I want to give them a great start.
My Project
Attending this professional development will help me bring these skills back to my students to help them n the Maker Educator Bootcamp, I will develop the skills of an educator who wants to incorporate making into my pedagogical toolkit. I will attend a course with the aim of supporting the integration of maker education principles and philosophies into the core curriculum. Sessions I attend will provide me with skills and model lessons using hands-on engineering and design challenges, digital manufacturing, microcontrollers and electronics and a variety of other inexpensive low- and high-tech materials and equipment. We will start down the road to considering how maker pedagogy is related to relevant learning goals and standards, and how to document and assess learning.
