Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Often times students can not relate to committing horrible crimes. It is through well written stories that images begin to appear in their imaginations.

I am a high school teacher of history, government, and law.

My students are highly motivated inner-city high schoolers from Wisconsin. Our school population is representative of multicultural and low-income. My students use their differences as inspiration for exploration.

My Project

My students need a set books which will be incorporated into our community project: Crime in Our Neighborhoods. My students will be learning about different motivations for committing crimes, the process once the criminal is caught, the punishments given out by the state, and the internal feelings of the criminal. By including "Crime & Punishment" in this project, my students will be exposed to classic literature in a non-traditional way. The students will be incorporating and comparing their community findings with what they discover in the story.

Our district has just gone through a severe layoff, so there is not money in our school's budget to purchase the materials we require.

I have seen real growth in my students when they are able to study meaningful material that they can relate. Mixing literature, research, and the community has been a great success.
