Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Chemistry is soooo hard!!!" is a complaint I often hear. Chemistry is even more challenging without the proper resources to present the various concepts. Having a visual means of teaching chemistry would play a tremendous role in ensuring comprehension of the subject.
My students are the beacons of light in my experience of teaching in an urban public school.
As a first year teacher, there are many, many challenges I am facing, especially working with teens. But the diverse personalities and traits of my students keeps me going day after day. When I wake up before the sun, I use them as motivation for getting up and driving across town to a district that has been struggling with producing successful public schools. Most of my students are Hispanic, so I know that they are unfortunately already at a disadvantage when it comes to academics, just because of their zip code. I can see that they all have the potential to succeed, but it has yet to be revealed to all of them. Everyday I make it my goal to instill confidence in them and emphasize how education can benefit them immensely, beginning with our chemistry class. Just as with any teaching days, there are good days and there are bad days. But I can honestly say that I love my students dearly!
My Project
The students I teach have been disserviced in many ways by their school district, and I would love to end that trend with my course. This can be done by doing all I can to give them the gift of knowledge by truly understanding the challenging subject of chemistry. I am positive that this will, in turn, instill in them confidence for all areas of their academic lives. An LCD projector will offer the opportunity to reach out to all the different types of learners I have: visual, auditory, kinesthetic, etc. Being able to see the abstract concepts of chemistry come to live will be a phenomenal experience. It will also make delivery of information much more effective. My school has short class periods and my classroom is often crowded. This makes note-taking for my students an unnecessary challenge. But an LCD projector would certainly alleviate this issue.
This project will facilitate learning in our classroom and definitely make it more fun!
By proving to my students that academic achievement is both attainable as well as pleasurable, I am certain this will help them get invested in the other areas of their academic careers. Because honestly, if a student is able to say that they excelled in Chemistry AND enjoyed it, they've got to know that this can be possible in their other classes! :-D
