Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are in 6th grade at an suburban elementary school with the highest free and reduced lunch rate in the district. Being the oldest students in the school, I try to make sure they have special projects that give them freedom and independence to set them apart from the other grades. I also want to make sure they have all the social skills and life skills necessary to move on to middle school. The ultimate goal also is for all the students, even students with special needs (academic, sensory, or behavior) to be on grade level for reading and math. In order to do this, I try to engage the students in learning, no matter what the subject so they are always absorbing new information. The awesome part about this sixth grade class is that they are creative, innovative, and hard working. It is important for these students to have the freedom or an outlet for their creativity and innovation in an independent way. It is also important that they leave elementary school with the right social, life skills, and reading skills!
My Project
My students deserve to have hands on opportunities for learning in the areas of science and social studies. The standards for what students in 6th grade need to know in science have been updated and new items are needed to teach these topics. For example learning about body systems with a body replica, learning about force and motion with marble and ball kits, and learning about cells with a microscope. Social studies standards have been consistent for years, but new items are needed to engage students in the learning such as up to date maps and map puzzles.
Learning about social studies and science is just as important as all the other subjects, so why not give the students what they need to learn and engage in social studies and science in the best manner possible?
All students deserve to have hands on experiences and these materials will give these students just that.
