Bringing Learning Objectives Back Into Focus

Help me give my students a better chance at increasing their focus with these yoga balls, which will in turn help me to close the gaps these students have from their COVID-19 interrupted classroom experience.

My Students

What makes my students special is that even though the last time they had a "normal" and complete in-person school year was when they were in the 5th grade, they still persevere and try to do their best with every task I assign. As a teacher, I know that students will always come to me with gaps in their learning due to various circumstances, but this past year and a half has brought its own special challenges that I believe to be directly related to COVID-19.

My students show up daily wanting to learn and do their best, but they struggle with learning stamina- they simply do not have the level of focus and attentiveness to detail that they they should have by this time in their educational careers.

They have not had the opportunity to practice and build this skill due to being forced to work at home virtually on their own time frames.

My Project

Throughout the COVID-19 fallout, my students have appreciated any in-person learning time that they can get. Even though students are engaged and happy to be back in the classroom, their time away has led to some pretty serious gaps in their learning.

The number one problem I am facing in the classroom is the lack of student stamina when it comes to learning.

My students shut down after about 20 minutes of focused work. It seems to me that they have lost that important skill of staying with a task for an extended period of time. They simply have not had the opportunity to practice that skill while at home during virtual learning. The classroom they are coming back into requires them to be performing for extended periods of time, but their mental focus is now at a deficit due to the fact that they have not had consistent practice since the 5th grade.

It is my hope that these yoga balls will help the students to increase their focus during lessons to maximize student performance. The integration of flexible seating will help them build upon their stamina to successfully complete learning objectives at the 8th grade level. I have such a short time with my students to help prepare them for the rigors of high school, and I am certain this project will make a difference.
